Kananu's story
From corporate life to restoring 21 acres in Nanyuki.

Kananu wa Nanyuki
Founder, host, and Earth Caretaker at TheCabinsNanyuki by DesertDewEstate
For two decades, Kananu moved to the rhythm of corporate strategy. All the while, her soul was quietly drafting a different blueprint: one shaped by the red soil of Nanyuki and the wind from Mount Kenya.

The transition was a patient, seven-year labour of love. Every dividend and spare weekend was channelled into 21 acres of rugged terrain. While others looked toward city life, Kananu oversaw the arrival of timber and stone and watched The Cabins Nanyuki, also known as Desert Dew Estate, rise from the earth. When she retired in her early fifties, she did not simply leave a career; she stepped into a legacy. Today, life at Desert Dew is an exercise in slow living and a generational sanctuary where her children learn the intentional rhythm of the land. The estate is alive with sustainable experiences. Twenty-one beehives hum beside the river, one for every acre, while mudfish aquaculture ponds invite guests to catch and grill their own food in the forest. At the heart of Kananu's mission is the forest itself. Trees cleared during construction created a debt she is now repaying with interest by restoring a dense indigenous canopy across the plateau. Kananu has traded the corporate ladder for a forest canopy, becoming part of a new generation of Earth Caretakers. She is not simply building a retreat; she is growing a future.
